Pakistan rejects Indian demand of consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav

Supporters take out a bike rally to protest against the death sentence awarded to former Naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav by a Pakistani court in Navi Mumbai

The Indian government on Wednesday filed an appeal with Pakistan seeking a review of death sentence awarded to Indian Kulbhushan Jadhav.

However, Pakistani media reported that Janjua turned down Bambawale's demand saying, "access under (bilateral) agreement is meant for prisoners and not for spies".

Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale called on Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and made a formal request.

"They wish to travel to Pakistan to meet him and also to personally file the petition and the appeal". He had also sought consular access to the Indian national on the basis of global law. Pakistan has levelled seven specific charges against Jadhav, including fomenting unrest in Balochistan and Karachi and alleged involvement in a string of terror attacks. He charged that Jadhav, gotten on hostile to state exercises, was trialled under court military.

Mr. Jadhav is also entitled to apply for mercy from the President of Pakistan within 90 days after the decision of CoAS on the mercy petition.

Pakistan has claimed that Mr Jadhav, 46, was arrested from the restive Balochistan province on March 3, 2016, where he was working as a spy for intel agency Research and Analysis Wing or RAW.

India has also requested for the 16th time for Consular Access to Jadhav.

First, he submitted a petition by Jadhav's mother addressed to the Pakistan government.

With both of Jhadav's parents having applied for visas with the Pakistan high commission in Delhi this week, India's top diplomats asked Pakistan to facilitate the approval of their applications.

On 14 April, Bambawale had met the Pakistani foreign secretary, showing increasing concern of India about the fate of Jadhav.

"All the hacking in Pakistan was part of our operation "Justice for Kulbhushan Jadhav".

Pakistan has so far not provided any evidence to back up the charges.

Pakistan's Foreign Office has said judicial process was followed during Jadhav's trial and that he was provided a lawyer in accordance with relevant laws and the Constitution. The Pakistani army claimed that Jadhav is a serving officer in the Indian Navy.
