Angela Merkel says Europeans can't rely on the USA anymore

German poll: Lead for Merkel's conservative bloc widens

Europe "must take its fate into its own hands" faced with a Western alliance divided by Brexit and Donald Trump's presidency, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday.

The president's first trip overseas was seen as a test of his ability to manage foreign relationships, something Merkel's comments drew attention to as Mr. Trump returned to Washington for Memorial Day weekend.

Merkel made her comments during a campaign event in Munich, after three days of meeting with Trump at sometimes strained North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Group of Seven (G7) summits in Belgium and Italy.

"The times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days", she said during the election campaign event in Bavaria. "We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands", the German Chancellor told election rally in Munich on Sunday. "The West is getting a little smaller".

"Europe is the answer", Martin Schulz said. It's a vital alliance, and one with which Trump has decidedly cooler relations than many of his predecessors.

Rapturous applause greeted her fiery calls for Europeans to fight for their own destiny. Merkel had described the climate change talks at the G7 meeting as "very hard, if not to say very dissatisfying". Trump reportedly told multiple people, including Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt, that he would be pulling out of the deal, according to three sources with knowledge of the conversations. "Precisely because they are so important, it's right to name differences honestly".

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Will Not Include A Han/Leia Style Romance
Each of these news nuggets fills in some blanks about the upcoming blockbuster, and we're hungry for as many as we can get. The new movie will be released (finally) on December 15 this year, and will apparently reveal a 'shocking truth'.

"That was a deeply staunch trans-Atlanticist speaking", he said. Some local media even dubbed it as "Schulz effect", and speculated Schulz might substitute Merkel since she lost momentum due to the migrant crisis. "The truth wasn't meant to be earth-shattering in terms of unwinding trans-Atlantic relations".

But it was a clear repudiation of Trump's troubled few days with European leaders, even as she held back from mentioning the USA president by name. The group managed to agree on the wording of goals for trade, but Trump was the lone holdout when it came to agreeing on policies to combat climate change.

"I think it's interesting that the comments coming after the G7, which focus more on the values in G7 and trans-Atlantic affairs", Berzina said.

"I've never seen her in 12 years give up on anything", she said. "I see the intervening periods as nearly a trial period".

"Of course she will continue to work with Trump wherever possible, fully aware of Europe's dependence on USA deterrence and of the fact that nothing big can achieved in Europe's neighbourhood or on a global scale without the United States", he wrote on Facebook. "It won't be possible to stall it", she said. "It looks like it's becoming a campaign issue".
