John Oliver on Trump firing Comey: 'Can he really be this stupid?'

If you don't know who John Oliver is (lucky you), he's an angry bespectacled comedian who has a show called Last Week Tonight on United States telly where he sits at a desk for an hour and yells at his audience from an autocue full of banter and jokes pre-written for him by a team of producers.

In case you hadn't heard, Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last Tuesday after ordering Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein to write letters arguing for his dismissal. Standing up to Trump isn't a partisan issue, Oliver argued. As Oliver notes, "It is inherently suspicious to try to put words in Comey's mouth as you kick him out the door".

However, Trump "undid two days of damage control in just a few sentences", Oliver said, after he sat down for an interview with NBC's Lester Holt and explained that he had planned to fire Comey all along.

Sunday night, that meant taking some time to talk about Trump's abrupt firing of former FBI director James Comey, which the president later admitted was, in part, due to his ongoing investigation over the administration's potential ties with Russian Federation.

Water leak delays historic 200th spacewalk
She holds the record for the most spacewalks by a female United States astronaut, and today's outing will be her ninth. The tank ran out of fuel after three minutes, and White had to pull himself back to the capsule by his tether.

Oliver focused first on one aspect of the "genuinely weird" termination letter Trump sent Comey ("and not just because it featured Trump's signature, which looks like a heart-rate monitor of a hamster on meth", the host said). "Because I don't. I don't remember what they felt like".

"I was thinking of the Russian Federation investigation when I fired Comey is the one thing that you are not supposed to say out loud", said Oliver is disbelief. It's the kind of response that makes you ask three questions. That means, according to the host, backing the investigations into the Trump campaign and Russian Federation or pressing for a special counsel to investigate the matter.

"The Founding Fathers created a system of checks and balances to limit the power of the President, but it only works if someone f**king checks, or balances".

"But at the very, very least here, they need to acknowledge that what has happened is f--ed up and not continue to give non-answers", Oliver said of Congress.
