Texas Police Officer Fired for Fatally Shooting Jordan Edwards

After a quick investigation, the Balch Springs, Texas police chief has fired the officer who triggered the deadly rifle shot, ultimately murdering the black teenager, NPR reports.

Edwards was in the passenger seat of a auto that was driving away from a house party in a Dallas suburb, where police were responding to a report of drunk teenagers.

The investigation found that officer Roy Oliver used a rifle to shoot through the window of a vehicle that Edwards was in.

Mr Oliver was dismissed for violating department policies in the shooting, said police chief Jonathan Haber. The department also found that Oliver's use of force violated many of its policies, and said that it plans to continue to quickly release information regarding the continuing investigation.

When news of Edwards' killing first broke, Haber said that the vehicle had been "aggressively" driving towards officers, which is what prompted Oliver to shoot at the teenagers.

At a press conference Tuesday, Chief Haber took responsibility for the mistake.

According to a statement released by the lawyer of the Edwards' family, were grateful for Oliver's dismissal but they still want him arrested for murder.

Jordan Edwards, as seen in an undated family photo provided by attorney S. Lee Merritt. However, Haber walked back his claim and said he "misspoke" after reviewing video footage of the incident and said Edwards and his companions were in fact driving away when Oliver fired at them. At the same time, the family of the victim, Jordan Edwards, is calling for criminal charges against in a case that has added to what seems like a grim fraternity of Black males killed at the hands of police.

It was also revealed that Roy Oliver can appeal to have his job reinstated within 10 days of his firing. "The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded".

His funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning.

He acknowledged then that the auto was moving away from officers when Oliver fired the shots and said the officer's actions were not consistent with the department's "core values". "Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys". Jordan's older brother who was driving the auto was detained overnight without reason and didn't learn of his brother's death until the next day. My department will continue to be responsive, be transparent and accountable'.

Meanwhile, the Dallas suburb is still reeling over the death of Edwards, 15, a high school freshman who was with his brothers and leaving an event where police were responding to gunshots they heard while investigating a call.
