Total of 108 people stay in Moscow hospitals following storm

The gales, with a speed of more than 80 kilometers per hour, knocked down several hundred trees and destroyed buildings in the Russian capital.

Scope of the damages has been so "startling" that Moscow's authorities began an investigation into them.

Earlier in the day, Yulia Ivanova, a senior aide to the Russian Investigative Committee's Moscow department chief, said that six people were killed in a storm.

According to her, the injured have been taken to hospitals.

Sources in the emergency services had told TASS one person died because of a falling tree in southwest Moscow.

Gale-force wind with gusts of 28-30 meters per second and a shower struck Moscow at around 16:00 pm (MSK).

More than 200 other people reported injuries related to the storm, which arrived during the middle of the afternoon when many people were outdoors.

There were delays at Moscow's airports due to the winds which are extremely rare for the Russian capital. The mayor said families of those killed will receive one million rubles ($17,760) each, according to Tass.

In the Moscow Region, the thunderstorm blew down over 3,000 trees and damaged roofs of 42 houses and maternity clinics, and also 322 cars.

"That's why the number of casualties is so high", Moscow's official website quoted mayor Sergei Sobyanin as saying late on Monday. Rescue efforts are ongoing, trying to clear fallen trees from the city's streets and assisting victims.
