Fort Worth student thrilled to be part of National Spelling Bee

10 Years of Spelling Bee Champions

Melodie Loya, 12, of Bainbridge, N.Y., spells her word out in her hand while competing in the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., Thursday, June 1, 2017.

Among this year's contestants was -year-old Edith Fuller of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the bee's youngest-ever contestant.

Taking center stage Wednesday afternoon, Hannah incorrectly spelled the word "rhubarb".

No matter. She got the word right and advanced to the finals of the competition. She made it through the second round on Wednesday by spelling "spiracle", and "scapegrace" in the third round.

"I didn't think we'd be taking the test with everybody in the room", Jake said.

The test was taken on Tuesday as the first round of the preliminaries.

"She does all the work in her mind", said Annie Fuller, who home-schools her daughter.

He won the Macon-Piatt Regional Spelling Bee in March and was one of nearly 300 spellers to compete in the National Bee in Washington this week. Spelling will begin at 10 a.m.

The 10-year-old is among the youngest spellers at the national bee in Washington, D.C. She competed against kids more than twice her age and knocked out the words "nyctinasty" and "tapas".

The victor - or winners - will take home $40,000 in cash, a trophy and other prizes.

If a child wants to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, he or she must attend a school that is enrolled with the Scripps National Spelling Bee - or be homeschooled, as in Fuller's case.

Las Vegas eighth-grader Maia Marshall finished the preliminary rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee just one place shy of earning a spot in the finals.

Final rounds Thursday will culminate with the championship round at 8:30 p.m.

At only 11 years-old, Hennessey still has three more years of eligibility.
