The FBI later said the gunman wounded four people. Police described the scene as "stable". He was wounded in a gunfight with Capitol Hill police armed with pistols who were at the scene, lawmakers said. Victims have been transported to local hospitals, police said.

Grothman said security would not typically follow a member of Congress to an event like this but because of Scalise's position as House majority whip, he had a detail with him.

Rep. Jimmy Duncan's office said the congressman was not at the practice this morning.

"Fortunately secret service was here because Steve Scalise was here", he said.

Besides wounding Scalise and the two officers, an aide, Zachary Barth, and a lobbyist, Matt Mika, were also hurt by the gunman, who has since died. The shooting occurred in the Del Ray area of Alexandria, just south of Washington, D.C. Afterwards, a helicopter arrived to medevac at least one shooting victim. Police did not release the suspect's identity.

Police say Hodgkinson was carrying an assault weapon similar to an M-4 rifle and a handgun in the attack.

He said the shooter appeared to be a white male but added that "I saw him for a second or two". Officers have "reorganized", he said. Scalise's district includes New Orleans.

Representative Brad Wenstrup told CBS News that he feared the violence could have been more serious. "At that point, people were dropping".
