Russia says Trump is using 'Cold War rhetoric' on Cuba

The Cuban media called Trump's new foreign policy on Cuba "regrettable" and "archaic".

But it will be hard to pick winners in Cuba's state-controlled economy, where government businesses and the private sector are thoroughly intertwined. But reactions on Capitol Hill are mixed, even within party lines. "That could bring them under fire now, and they could find themselves much weaker".

Under Trump's revised policy, while Cubans living in the states still can travel to Cuba, and the USA embassy remains open on Cuban soil, Americans once again are restricted from traveling to the island, and business transactions are also limited.

Sleyko and a friend had booked rooms through Airbnb and were spending their days walking around the city in the muggy heat. But, facing pressure from U.S. businesses and even some fellow Republicans to avoid turning back the clock completely in relations with Cuba, the president chose to leave intact some of his Democratic predecessor's steps toward normalization.

People-to-people contacts generated new ideas.

"Our new policy begins with strictly enforcing USA law", Trump said Friday during a Miami appearance to announce a policy that bans most US business dealings with the Cuban military and puts some limits on travel.

But Trump has, in the past, apparently done business in Cuba - in violation of the embargo the USA had in place against the country.

"If independent American travel is cut off, you won't only hurt the bed-and-breakfasts". Cubans, who had little access to the Internet, also found themselves able to browse online.

The statement added that Havana will continue to work with the U.S.in the matters of common interests, but will not make concessions inherent to its sovereignty and independence.

This will nearly certainly make all American travel to the island a complicated maze of avoiding payments to military-linked monopolies ranging from hotels to gas stations to convenience stores.

New Zealand level with U.S. in America's Cup final
In the first race, Spithill was over the starting line early, forcing him to drop two boat lengths behind to clear the penalty. Two races are scheduled on both days this weekend, beginning at 14:12 local time (1:12pm ET).

In 2016, Newsweekreported that a company run by Trump had - in the late 1990s - secretly conducted business in Fidel Castro's Cuba by funneling cash for the trip to the country into an American consulting firm, which helped Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts executives "make it appear legal by linking it after the fact to a charitable effort". They urged him to ease barriers with Havana that will boost trade and create jobs in both countries.

But that's beginning to change. Trump thrust the US and Cuba back on a path toward open hostility Friday with a blistering denunciation of the island's communist government.

Experts say travelers may simply use the "support for the Cuban people" category instead, depending on how broadly the authorities interpret that going forward.

But Trump's rollback is expected to put a brake on that growth.

Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) says President Donald Trump's new Cuba policy closes off a potentially lucrative market for American farmers.

In one form or another, the embargo on Cuba has been in place since the Eisenhower administration.

In Old Havana's tourist quarter, entire city blocks of crumbling century-old buildings are being renovated and turned into boutique hostels and chic cafes. "I do think you're likely to see a fewer number of flights and higher fares", said Andrew Keller, a partner at Hogan Lovells focusing on global trade and investment. There were two other buildings on the same block also getting an overhaul.

Trump's address in Miami announced changes in the United States' policy toward Cuba after the Obama administration chose to normalize relations with the island nation following a decades-long freeze of diplomatic ties.

"We will not be silent in the face of communist oppression any longer", Trump said. The U.S. should engage them, not seek to isolate them.

"The real challenge in implementing will be this", said Chris Sabatini, a lecturer at Columbia University's School of worldwide and Public Affairs and the director of the website Global Americans. Flake's bill has 54 co-sponsors, including nine Republicans.

Sen. Marco Rubio, who claims credit for writing the Trump policy along with a fellow Cuban-American and Florida Republican, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, tweeted Friday that individual American travelers will still be able to go to Cuba for the goal of supporting the Cuban people, a category that includes helping human rights organizations and non-governmental groups meant to strengthen democracy and civil society. "We're not the Soviet Union".
