Still no proof of collusion with Russians, says Donald Trump

Donald Trump's assertion that he's the victim of a witch hunt is fake news writes Alexandra Petri

Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is investigating the finances and business dealings of Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and adviser, as part of the probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to officials familiar with the matter.

It was not clear whether the president was basing his tweet on direct knowledge, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether he obstructed justice by firing Mr Comey last month amid the Russian Federation investigation.

The President's words of apparent confirmation come after a week of reports from Washington that his firing of Mr Comey, who was heading up a probe into his former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and his possible ties to the Kremlin, had led the investigation to broaden its scope. Was it Rosenstein, who wrote the memo criticizing Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server that Trump initially cited in firing Comey on May 9?

President Donald Trump admitted to being under investigation Friday, in a perplexing tweet that assigned blame for the investigation to "the man who told me to fire the FBI Director". Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to oversee it in the wake of Comey's ouster.

Special counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional panels are investigating the Russian Federation issue, which has cast a shadow over the early months of Trump's presidency. Mueller has scheduled meetings with top intelligence officials to determine whether the President tried to pressure them to shut down the Russian Federation investigation.

He had likened the appointment of the special counsel with the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history".

Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy
And she wouldn't go into anything about his politics but did add this detail that he sold everything he owned from his businesses. Later that afternoon, it was reported that the sole shooter involved was 66-year-old Belleville, Illinois, resident James T.

This latest blast nearly suggests that Rosenstein told Trump to fire Comey because of Russian Federation, not because of the prior Clinton investigation debacle.

"As you and I have discussed, however, I can not defend the Director's handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton's emails, and I do not understand his refusal to accept the almost universal judgment that he was mistaken".

A Justice Department official - who declined to speak on the record - told CNN that the White House didn't order Rosenstein's statement.

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story", Trump wrote.

Even though Mueller is technically leading the investigation, the DOJ controls the funding for the investigation and can fire Mueller if the department decides it's warranted.
