Drug-Resistant HIV Is On the Rise

2.1 million HIV cases in India, 50% drop in new infections in past decade: UNAIDS report

In contrast, progress against the targets has been poor in the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where AIDS-related deaths have pointedly risen. The report includes more than one detailed analysis of the progress and challenges to achieve the '90-90-90 Targets, ' which establish that 90 percent of the HIV people know their serologic situation, receive continual antiretroviral therapy and have the possibility to access viral suppression.

"In the region, four of five (81 per cent) of people living with HIV who know their status are accessing antiretroviral therapy".

According to UNAIDS, there were almost 36.7 million people around the world who were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2015. A recent United Nation report confirmed that India, China and Pakistan are among 10 countries that accounted for more than 95% of total new HIV infection in Asia and Pacific region in 2016.

It says about 36.7 million around the world were living with the disease a year ago.

Ending Aids found that providing services closer to where people live and work will be a key factor in ending the Aids epidemic and as a result UNAids and the AU are backing an initiative which will recruit and train 2 million community health workers in Africa.

In the MENA region, the annual number of adults and children dying due to AIDS-related illnesses increased from an estimated 3,600 in 2000 to more than 11,000 in 2016.

There is a 29% drop in the new HIV cases among all individuals and a 56% drop in HIV cases in children over the same period.

A new UNAIDS report has revealed that for the first time, more than half of people living with HIV around the world are taking treatment.

Homeland Security to allow 15000 more visas for seasonal workers
But Congress did not renew the returnees exemption when it expired last fall, effectively curbing the number of available visas. Businesses can apply for the visas starting this week and foreign workers can stay employed from four to 10 months.

At the end of 2016, these proportions were 70%, 77% and 82%, according to Unaids.

UNAIDS Country Director Mamadou al Sakhu said his organisation will fully support Punjab for their dedication to the cause of HIV/AIDS and will also extend support in the effective implementation of the HIV legislation, once passed.

On the contrary, the progress against the set targets is trailing in Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Three-quarters of pregnant women with HIV also now have access to drugs that prevent their babies from becoming infected.

And among the most significant impacts of a vast scale-up of HIV testing, treatment and prevention programs, has been in the reduction of AIDS-related deaths, which have dropped by nearly half since 2005.

There are still one third of HIV positive persons who are unaware of their status and are spreading the virus.

Going by this trend, the global target of reducing the figure to 500,000 a year by 2020 - adopted as a global target by UNAIDS in 2013 - seems unattainable.
