Open Border Lawyers: Anti-Sanctuary City Bills Are 'Mean-spirited'

HR 3003 seeks to eliminate federal funds from the Department of Justice and National Security to sanctuary jurisdictions "that do not comply with federal arrest warrants", Univisión reported. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly appeared with House Republicans at the Capitol on Thursday and said the bills will help ICE "uphold our nation's immigration laws and help make our communities more safe".

"I strongly believe that we must restore the rule of law and take responsible steps to protect Americans", said Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona. Goodnow also said that even if the law were passed, its fight would be "far from over".

The other, called "Kate's Law" after Kate Steinle, who was killed by an undocumented immigrant with a long rap sheet who'd previously been deported, criminalizes and significantly increases penalties for undocumented immigrants who are caught by authorities multiple times. The bill increases prison penalties for undocumented immigrants who return to the US after having been deported.

"We're calling on all members of Congress to honor grieving American families by passing these lifesaving measures in the House, in the Senate, and then sending them to my desk for a very rapid signature", Trump said during a White House meeting with crime victims Wednesday.

The White House strongly supports both measures. Kate's Law would create a 10-year maximum sentence for those removed or denied entry more than twice who cross without authorization or ask for admission at the border.

House Judiciary Committee Chair Bob Goodlatte (R-Virginia), who introduced both bills, wrote an op-ed in The Hill on Thursday, saying that the two bills are "needed desperately". It also withholds certain federal grants from jurisdictions that violate federal law by prohibiting their officers from communicating with ICE. The bill increases mandatory penalties for illegal aliens who re-enter the US after being deported. Bob Goodlatte that would punish sanctuary cities and criminal aliens who re-enter the USA after being deported. In a post on the right-leaning Cato Institute's website, the think-tank's immigration policy analyst David Bier described the "No Sanctuary" bill as anti-federalist and said parts of it pose a threat to state sovereignty.

Despite the House passage of the two bills on Thursday, Democrats are likely to present a roadblock in the Senate.

Shawwal moon sighted in Saudi Arabia
Sunday is the first day of Eid ul Fitr as the crescent of Shawwal has been sighted in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states. The exact date of Eid depends on a combination of the sighting of the new moon and astronomical calculations.

"During my campaign, I met many grieving families who all had the same plea: lawmakers must put the safety of American families first", said the President in a statement. That's the San Francisco woman who was killed by a person who was in the country illegally.

Republicans are moving to follow through on President Donald Trump's campaign priorities to crack down on illegal immigration and sanctuary cities. Senate Democrats successfully blocked similar bills in 2015 and 2016.

Immigration lawyers have a direct stake in keeping the illegal alien population in the US large and growing.

"By flagrantly disregarding the rule of law, sanctuary cities are putting lives at risk, and we can not tolerate that", Ryan said.

Johnson also said Kate's Law "would waste American taxpayer funds by imposing severe prison sentences" for illegal aliens who have already been deported from the USA, but continue returning illegally.

President Trump's policies have already had an impact, with 64 percent fewer apprehensions and inadmissible entries at the southwest border compared to the same time a year ago. The only Republican to vote against the bill was Rep. Justin Amash of MI, a Trump critic.
