Small plane crashes on 405 Freeway near John Wayne Airport; 2 hospitalized

The plane is on the southbound freeway near the MacArthur Boulevard exit.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot declared an emergency shortly after taking off from John Wayne Airport.

NBC News reported that two people were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash and their conditions are unknown.

Many Twitter and Facebook users were driving on the freeway at the moment the incident occurred around 9:35 a.m.

Local television coverage included audio released of the man piloting the plane, shouting "May Day" and "I can't make it back to the airport" seconds before the crash.

Virginia districts drawn to help GOP
Two researchers who developed the efficiency gap say Kentucky's results are, statistically speaking, not much different than zero. Even with the new lines from previous year , Virginia's congressional district favors the GOP, the AP's analysis shows.

A small plane crashed on the southbound 405 Freeway near John Wayne Airport on Friday morning, leaving two people injured.

Other photographs and video of the wreckage popped up all over Twitter by people stuck in traffic passing the plane. "Spun around, had a passenger in there, saw flames all around us, thought at first it was just a big rig that hit us", he said.

"The fact that a plane was able to land and only strike a single vehicle is extraordinary", Orange County Fire Capt. Larry Kurtz said.

The California Highway Patrol says four cars were struck by parts of a small plane when it crashed on a Southern California freeway and burst into flames. The freeway was shut down in both directions. The airfield was temporarily closed to arrivals.
