South Australia and Tesla To Build World's Largest Battery

South Australia derives more than 40 per cent of its power from wind and solar energy and Premier Jay Weatherill

"Together, the South Australian government, Neoen and Tesla will demonstrate that renewables can provide dependable, distributable power that will turn a new page in Australia's energy future", he said.

Many believe that renewables can power a nation, when paired with batteries.

The deal, which was confirmed on Friday, forms a major part of the government's $550 million energy plan.

Musk responded with a firm "yes", promising that, should Tesla not manage to install a 100-megawatt, 129-megawatt-hour, lithium-ion battery within 100 days of the signing of necessary contracts, the entire project would go ahead free of charge.

Musk said a failure to deliver on time would cost the company around $50m and told reporters that there were some risks attached to the project.

The Powerpack system will be hooked up to the Hornsdale Wind Farm under construction near Jamestown, storing energy for on-demand delivery to some 30,000 homes.

Power for the energy storage facility will come from a wind farm operated by Neoen, a French company that provides wind and solar power.

Musk first made the bid, and the 100-day commitment, in a tweet back in March.

Vehicle Strikes Group of Pedestrians in East Boston
Police said the cause of the crash is under investigation and in a statement said the crash does not look to be intentional. The victims have been taken to area hospitals including Massachusetts General Hospital and Tufts Medical Center.

South Australia Premier Jay Weatherill said the battery will protect the state from future energy-related crises.

Completion is expected before the end of the year, with Musk saying he hoped the Tesla Powerpack would make a "significant statement for the viability of renewable energy to the world".

Tesla emphasised the significance of this deal, as it will transform South Australia to not only a domestic leader, but an worldwide front-runner, when it comes to renewable energy solutions.

And now, the world's largest lithium-ion battery will be installed in South Australia within just 100 days, solving our energy problems.

"It will completely transform the way in which renewable energy is stored, and also stabilise the South Australian network as well as putting downward pressure on prices", he said. "And I suspect in most cases it is", Musk said.

"The bottom line is we're getting close to prime time", McCullough said.

South Australia got it worst with a state-wide blackout in September.

It isn't only in Australia where Tesla is working with utilities on energy storage.
