Trump's Foreign Policy Is Jeopardized After Senate Approves Sanctions Against Russia

Starting on August 1, the Russian Federation will also seize two buildings belonging to the USA - a diplomatic warehouse on the Dorozhnaya Streetand a dacha compound along the Moscow River where staff members walk their dogs and hold barbecues.

Just yesterday, by a vote of 98-2, the U.S. Senate voted for confrontation, imperialism and sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Putin said a lot of Russian diplomats had been expelled "without any particular reason" - a reference to sanctions imposed by President Barack Obama in December for Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. election - and said there had also been problems in business "which had no foundation at all".

Republicans and Democrats have pushed for more sanctions partly as a response to conclusions by US intelligence agencies that the Kremlin interfered in the election.

It is the first major foreign policy legislation approved by Congress under Trump, who has struggled to advance his domestic agenda despite Republicans controlling the Senate and House of Representatives.

The bill would affect a range of Russian industries and might further hurt the Russian economy, already weakened by 2014 sanctions imposed after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine.

In addition to the reduction in USA diplomatic personnel, Russian Federation also said it would block the US embassy in Russian Federation from accessing its warehouses in Moscow and a vacation compound in Serebryany Bor.

The European Union has also expressed concern about the new sanctions, saying they could have an impact on the European energy sector.

Earlier on Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin warned that Russian Federation had so far exercised restraint, but would have to retaliate against what he described as boorish and unreasonable United States behaviour. Weiss suggested that Trump's low approval ratings at home, his tendency to alienate North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies such as Germany and his inability to pass domestic legislation all contribute to a Russian perception that he is weakening the United States.

Trump now faces an even tougher decision. "Trump's performance surely has left nobody in Moscow with the impression he is a guy who can deliver", said Weiss, now at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think tank.

The White House has not been clear about what the president will do.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking ahead of the Senate vote, accused US lawmakers of 'insolence' and promised retaliation if the sanctions become law", as NPR's Scott Neuman reported Thursday. The measure would apply terrorism sanctions to the country's Revolutionary Guards and enforce an arms embargo.

"This kind of blackmail aimed at restricting the cooperation between Russian Federation and other nations is a threat for many countries and global businesses", the statement said.

The White House says Trump supports sanctions on the three countries in question and will review the legislation.

Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., voted against the sanctions bill.

Once Trump receives the bill, if he does not sign it, he has 10 days, excluding Sundays, before he must issue a veto and prevent the bill from becoming law automatically.
