Venezuela Maduro's 'Despacito' political remix backfires quickly

There's a new take on the hit Latin pop song Despacito.

Despacito became the most streamed track of all time worldwide.

The singers behind the famous Despacito song are not happy after Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro used an altered version of their song to promote the constituent assembly.

At a rally last Sunday, Maduro introduced a version of the song with new lyrics encouraging the audience to vote in the country's upcoming election to form a "constitutional assembly", which would be in charge of rewriting the country's 18-year-old constitution.

The original version by the Puerto Rican artists Fonsi and Daddy Yankee was already a Latin-market hit; Bieber's remix gave it an global boost and beat the record he'd previously set with 2015's "Sorry", which logged 4.38 billion plays.

"At no point was I asked, nor did I authorise, the use or the change in lyrics of Despacito for political means, and much less so in the middle of the deplorable situation experienced by Venezuela, a country I love so much", Luis Fonsi said on Instagram on Monday (24 July). Maduro played the song on his weekly television show. He captioned the picture, saying: "That you illegally appropriate a song [Despacito] does not compare with the crimes you commit and have committed in Venezuela".

"What else can you expect of a person who has robbed so many lives of young dreamers and of people who want a better future for their children?" the reggaeton star wrote.

"Your dictatorial regime is a joke, not only for my Venezuelan brothers, but for the entire world". Those in favor of rewriting the constitution, however, say the president is simply hoping to restore peace in his fractured country.

More than 7.5 million Venezuelans recently voted in a symbolic referendum against the constituent assembly and the opposition has vowed to hold a 48-hour strike in protest this week.
