Woman fatally shot by police after calling 911

A woman who called 911 to report a possible assault in the alley behind her home was fatally shot by a Minneapolis police officer Saturday

Two officers reportedly responding to her 911 call pulled into the alley near the home she shared with her fiance, Don Damond, who she was to marry in August.

Justine Damond, a Sydney woman who'd been living with her fiancé and son in Minneapolis, was shot dead after calling 911 to report an alleyway attack.

For reasons not yet understood, the officer in the passenger seat fired his weapon at Damond, shooting her through the driver's side door.

Minnesota officials were investigating on Monday how an Australian woman who called police for help over the weekend ended up shot and killed by one of the officers who responded in an alley near her house. Damond's death has caused heightened tensions since July 15, and resulted in the two Minneapolis police officers being placed on paid administrative leave.

Investigators said the officers involved had body cameras, but they weren't turned on.

Justine's maiden last name was Ruszczyk, according to her personal Facebook page, although she used Damond on her professional website. She had already begun using his name professionally.

"I hope and pray this is a wake-up call for the community to stop being divided by race and socioeconomic status ... for treating everybody with respect", said Nekima Levy-Pounds, according to the Star Tribune.

"I know everyone thinks this when a loved one goes in any kind of manner but she was seriously one of the most handsome people that has ever walked the face of the planet", King said.

Both Damonds taught meditation and spirituality classes at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community center.

She has been described as an "incredible woman" and a "brilliant, well-known, local healer".

"There are still many questions about what took place, and while the investigation is still in its early stages, I am asking the BCA to release as much information, as quickly as they are able to", Hodges said in a statement.

The Star Tribune said some people wept at a vigil held in the neighborhood Sunday.
