Chris Hadfield weighs in on the Perseid meteor shower

Comet-end-world

The annual event, which takes place in July and August, reached its peak on Saturday with the chance to see up to 100 meteors per hour.

The month of August is huge for many people who like to look up at the sky because a meteor shower is on full display. Year 1993, witnessed the best Perseid performance with a shower of 300 meteors per hour. The upcoming total solar eclipse on August 21 has seen hundreds of thousands of people make arrangements to get the best possible view of the phenomenon - the first of its kind since 1979.

They are called the Perseids because they seem to come from near the north-east constellation Perseus, named after the Greek slayer of monsters.

The Perseids are pieces of debris from the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle.

Kenyans begin voting in tense general elections
To win outright, a candidate needs 50 per cent plus one vote, and at least 25 per cent of the votes in 24 of Kenya's 47 counties. The IEBC said in a statement that extra ICT support staff have been brought into service to resolve minor technical issues.

The peak time to watch the light show is around 10 p.m. on Saturday night, but it's expected to illuminate the sky Sunday night as well.

You will be able to see the meteors with the naked eye on a clear evening. In general, the Perseid meteor showers have 80 meteors an hour. The particles - which can be as small as a grain of sand - meet a fiery end after roughly a thousand years, as part of the comet's dust cloud. "The moonlight can create a haze and reduce the number of shooting stars you see".

Look up at a height that's approximately two-thirds of the way into the sky towards any direction to see the shower.

Robin Scagell, vice president of the Society for Popular Astronomy, added that: "The Perseids can be very bright and often quite spectacular".
