Makenna O'Donnell on Michelle Carter

The Woman Who Encouraged Her Boyfriend To Kill Himself Over Texts Could Be Sentenced Today

The cousin of Conrad Roy, a MA teenager who died of carbon monoxide poisoning after locking himself in his truck, said she feels "sick" that Roy's then-girlfriend, Michelle Carter, who sent texts urging him to commit suicide, will remain free pending appeals.

O'Donnell also said she believes Carter "needs help". "How could Michelle Carter react so wrongly and reassured my son to end his life? has she lost all her humanity?", he asked.

Her legal team had argued that both she and Roy suffered from mental illness.

Ahead of Carter's sentencing Thursday, Roy's family had urged the judge to impose the maximum 20-year sentence. She hasn't shown anything - nothing, it's just blank, ' O'Donnell said.

The Judge was however of the opinion that her age, level of maturity or even her mental illness did not have any significant impact on her actions.

"Then she texted my niece a couple hours later, 'Hey, do you know where your brother is?' Then she texted his mom the next day, 'Oh, hey, have you heard from Conrad?' Knowing all along", she said.

Conrad Roy's father said to the Taunton juvenile court that, "he is heartbroken over his son's death and accused Michelle Carter of his son's death".

Michelle in text messages sent two weeks before Roy's death had reportedly said: "Hang yourself, jump off a building, stab yourself I don't know there's a lot of ways".

Carter encouraged him over text messages and phone calls to take his life.

"This is a bad, awful tragedy and she very much regrets this", said Joseph Cataldo, requesting five years of supervised probation attached to conditions such as mental health counseling.

Conrad Roy, 18, was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in his pickup truck in 2014 What happened to Conrad Roy?

Carter, 20, crouched down into the back of a vehicle outside her family's Plainville home hours after a sentencing hearing that sent Roy's father rushing away from the courthouse in disappointment.

"Don't be scared. You already made this decision and if you don't do it tonight you're gonna be thinking about it all the time and stuff all the rest of your life and be miserable", she wrote.

'I do believe she needs help and I do believe that she needs to take responsibility for her actions.

Prosecutors said Carter stayed on the telephone listening to her boyfriend as he died in the truck.

The American Civil Liberties Union of MA issued a strong rebuke at the time, arguing the conviction violated free speech protections. The judge said those words constituted "wanton and reckless conduct" under the manslaughter statute.

Carter was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in June. "Take away the spotlight that she so desperately craves".
