Manhunt underway after rookie officer killed during traffic stop

MSHP says they are looking for Ian McCarthy 39 of Clinton MO as a person of interest in the case

'We know as police officers that those traffic stops are always risky because we don't know the individual that is driving. The suspect drove about three blocks before crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Michael, who had worked for the Clinton Police Department less than a year, died in the shootout, KSHB reported.

"In a small community, the police department is very tight-knit, so it's obviously devastating for the family and also for the police department", Lowe said. Authorities did not know whether he was wounded.

Missouri State Highway Patrol has identified the suspect as 39-year-old Ian McCarthy of Clinton. The officer was able to return fire, but police aren't sure if the suspect was struck. The driver fled the scene. "He was there protecting and serving, and that's what we are called to do, and he did it, and he did with heroic fashion", Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said.

McCarthy now faces charges for first-degree murder and felony armed criminal action in Henry County, where the city of Clinton is located.
