U.S. slaps more sanctions on Venezuela politicians including former President Chavez's brother

There was no immediate reaction from Venezuela's leftist government to the scathing criticism from the United Nations, which said preliminary findings from an investigation conducted in June and July "paint a picture of widespread and systematic use of excessive force and arbitrary detentions against demonstrators in Venezuela".

Venezuela's new constitutional assembly has passed a decree declaring itself superior to all other branches of government.

The building was taken over late on Monday with the help of soldiers led by Delcy Rodriguez, the head of the pro-Maduro assembly and former foreign minister.

Venezuela has been beset by a wave of anti-government protests since April 1 that have left at least 121 people dead.

Mr. Guterres' spokesman said United Nations is closely following events in the country and is convinced the crisis requires a political solution based on dialogue and compromise.

"We are not threatening anyone", said Aristobulo Isturiz, the constitutional assembly's first vice president.

Ramon Muchacho, the mayor of the upscale Caracas municipality of Chacao, was one of a group of opposition mayors who had been threatened with arrest for failing to prevent street protests in their jurisdictions.

Since the installation of the Constituent Assembly last Friday, Congress and the new legislative body has shared the Legislative Palace - working in different halls.

Tillerson to North Korea: 'We are not your enemy'
At a State Department press briefing on Tuesday, Tillerson conceded State still "had a lot of open slots" but praised career diplomats for stepping up in the interim.

Peru was urging that Maduro's government be condemned for carrying out "a new form of coup d'etat" through the "unconstitutional" Constituent Assembly, that political prisoners in Venezuela be freed, and that the country hold scheduled elections, diplomatic sources said.

He said he still considered himself the "legitimate mayor" of the district.

The constitutional assembly's meeting Tuesday came as criticism mounted from foreign governments that have refused to recognize the new body.

Colombia's Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin, along with foreign ministers and representatives from across the Americas, gives a news conference after a meeting to discuss the Venezuelan crisis, in Lima, Peru, August 8, 2017.

The President also welcomed the ANC's decision to remove the sitting prosecutor general, Luisa Ortega Diaz, a vocal Maduro critic, and named former ombudsman Tarek William Saab as a temporary replacement.

The July 30 election of the Constituent Assembly was marred by street violence, in which 10 people died, and charges of fraud brought by the UK-based company that supplied the polling technology.

"We're asking of the Justice and Truth Commission that anyone who has acted against the fatherland be stripped of public duties", he said, using the formal name of the commission.

Despite a widespread popular uprising, that has been violently repressed by state security forces, causing more than 120 deaths, Corbyn appears to place ideological affinity with his socialist comrade Maduro over human rights considerations, even though virtually the entire worldwide community has aligned to reject Maduro's power grab.
