Vancouver officially in running to host 2026 World Cup matches

Tampa's Raymond James Stadium being considered to join bid for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Included in the list were nine Canadian stadiums in seven cities: McMahon Stadium (Calgary); Commonwealth Stadium (Edmonton); Olympic Stadium (Montreal); Saputo Stadium (Montreal); TD Place (Ottawa); Mosaic Stadium (Regina); Rogers Centre (Toronto); BMO Field (Toronto); and B.C. Place (Vancouver).

Mexico's proposed venues are limited to three stadiums, most notably Mexico City' Estadio Azteca, the stage for the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals.

The three countries plan to submit a united bid that includes 20 to 25 venues.

A complete list of the cities being considered can be found here.

The bid is part of a three-nation combined effort of the United States, Canada and Mexico, which will be bidding against Morocco to make North America the host for the planet's biggest sporting event this side of the Olympics. The stadium does meet the required threshold for group stage matches, though- which require 40,000 seats.

Vancouver's BC Place Stadium is a likely a favourite given its recent renovations and acclaimed history with hosting the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup championship final and a number of qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Cities have until September 5 to declare their interest in taking part in the bid process.

The United Bid Committee of the United States, Mexico and Canada sent "requests for information" to officials in 44 cities that house the various stadiums being considered as potential venues.

The 2026 World Cup is set to be the first with a 48-team format, up from the current 32-squad setup.

The Washington area would have a strong case to host men's World Cup matches in 2026. Stadiums of every National Football League team are on the list except for Buffalo's New Era Field. "The bid committee will also evaluate cities on their commitment to sustainable event management, aspirations to develop soccer, and the positive social impact they anticipate in the local community and beyond stemming from the event".
