Victim of 9/11 identified after 16 years using new DNA technology

1641st person killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11 has been identified

Most of the new testing has pointed toward already-identified victims of the terror attacks.

The victim will not be publicly identified at the family's request, the New York City medical examiner's office said on Monday.

It is the first new identification of a World Trade Center victim since 2015, when Matthew David Yarnell, 26, was identified using DNA.

His distinguishing proof was affirmed through DNA retesting. His remains were recovered at Ground Zero in 2001. He is the 1,641 victim of the 2,753 killed at the lower Manhattan site that day to be identified; 40 percent of those killed have not had their remains identified.

There are more than 21,900 pieces of remains yet unidentified.

After some time, the therapeutic analyst's office came to utilize a procedure that includes beating the sections to remove DNA, at that point contrasting it with the workplace's gathering of hereditary material from casualties or their relatives.

Forensic experts have said over the years that more identifications are expected as DNA technology evolves, although the pace has been slow. This was due to the effects of the heat, bacteria and chemicals such as jet fuel - which made it all that more hard to identify victims.

No full bodies were discovered after the attack, according to The Journal.

More than 2,750 people were killed when two passenger jets destroyed the Twin Towers, the symbol of New York's financial wealth and confidence.
