What to know about Guam, the US territory targeted by North Korea

Retail brands surprise on Wall Street

North Korea claimed "only absolute force" can work on someone as "bereft of reason" as Trump and detailed plans to fire a salvo of missiles into waters around the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

"What the president is doing is sending a strong message to North Korea in language that Kim Jong Un can understand, because he doesn't seem to understand diplomatic language", Tillerson said.

In the latest stand off between the U.S. and N. Korea, Trump was quoted as saying "North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States", adding "They will be met with the fire and the fury like the world has never seen". This morning Pyongyang said it could bomb the U.S. enclave of Guam in the Pacific.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 7 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,466 as of 11:20 a.m. Wednesday on Wall Street.

"North Korea was fodder for the overnight trade, and as we headed into today we haven't seen any more saber-rattling", said JJ Kinahan, chief market strategist at TD Ameritrade.

The wider S&P 500 index slipped 2.8 points to 2,478.1, while the Nasdaq dropped 18.75 points to 6,365.02. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.2 percent to 3,273.71 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng was off 0.2 percent at 27,803.55.

Other safe havens for investors were the Swiss franc and gold.

Geopolitical tensions mounted on Wednesday after comments from Donald Trump, directed at North Korea, sent shockwaves across global markets.

US intelligence officials at the Defense Intelligence Agency have concluded that North Korea has created a nuclear weapon small enough to fit in a missile, according to The Washington Post.

Dubai's Torch Tower catches fire - again
In both incidents, it appears fire alarms alerted residents and building staff knocked on doors to ensure a quick evacuation. The Torch Tower is the fifth tallest residential building in the world and stands at more than 330 metres (1,105 ft).

In Europe, France's CAC 40 fell 1.6 percent to 5,135 while Germany's DAX was down 1.3 percent at 12,133. Netflix lost 1.5 per cent.

While North Korea is likely to remain in focus, a report on consumer price inflation may also attract attention on Friday, with consumer prices expected to rise by 0.2 percent in July. TripAdvisor shares shed $2.70, or 6.8 percent, to $36.85.

However, shares of Dean Foods tumbled, trading 20.1 percent weaker at US$11.96 as of 2.24pm in NY, after the USA dairy processor posted quarterly results that fell short of expectations and downgraded its full-year forecast amid "a challenging and rapidly evolving retail environment".

Pyongyang, meanwhile, has been louder in its complaints against a new and tough round of sanctions imposed by the United Nations, with strong USA backing, and Washington's use of Guam as a staging ground for its stealth bombers, which could be used to attack North Korea and are a particularly sore point with the ruling regime in Pyongyang.

U.S. Treasury yields rose on Tuesday as investors reacted to the job openings report.

Silver futures for September delivery on the Comex rose 2.9 per cent, the biggest gain for a most-active contract since November.

CURRENCIES: The dollar fell to 109.96 yen from 110.48 yen late Tuesday.

Crude oil prices extended their slide as exports from key OPEC producers rose, despite news of lower crude shipments from Saudi Arabia.
