Central Mexico was rocked on Tuesday afternoon by a catastrophic magnitude 7.1 quake.

The event caused between three and four billion United States dollars in damage as 412 buildings collapsed and another 3,124 were seriously damaged in the city.

At this time, it's unclear what kind of injuries and casualties have come as a result of the massive quake.

Tuesday's natural disaster follows a separate quake in Mexico about two weeks ago.

The city and its surrounding area are home to about 20 million people.

The quake struck on the anniversary of a deastating quake in 1985 that killed thousands of people in the city.

A small natural disaster recorded early Tuesday in IL was felt more than 100 miles away.

The centre of the quake struck more than 160km away from the capital in the state of Puebla. "I really thought the building was going to fall", reporter Emily Green told NPR from Mexico City.

The strongest natural disaster in IL in six years was registered in the southern portion of the state Tuesday morning.

Local television broadcast images of collapsed buildings and rubble-filled streets, according to The Associated Press.

Mexican TV and social media showed cars crushed by debris.

"There are lots of people on the street and folks crying, a little bit beside themselves", Green said.
