China experts say 3.4-quake hits North Korea in 'suspected explosion'

Daily AUDUSD

The U.S. Geological Survey said on Saturday it could not conclusively confirm whether a magnitude 3.5 quake detected in North Korea was manmade or natural.

A magnitude 3.5 natural disaster struck at 4:29 a.m. ET Saturday 22 kilometers (more than 13 miles) east-northeast of Sungjibaegam, North Korea, the US Geological Survey said.

The U.N. sanctions were a response to North Korea's sixth nuclear test, which experts said was its biggest by far, earlier this month.

On Friday, Russia urged "hot heads" to calm down as the United States admitted it felt "challenged" by North Korea's warning that it could test a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific.

The United States Geological Survey was neutral in its assessment on the cause of the tremor, which it recorded as a 3.5 magnitude quake, saying in a statement that it could not "conclusively confirm at this time the nature (natural or human-made) of the event". Tillerson says it would be President Donald Trump's decision, but he adds that all military options remain on the table. -North Korea nuclear crisis, no one can be sure where this would lead or whether the North will even carry out its threat.

"Regarding which measures to take, I don't really know since it is what Kim Jong Un does", Ri said.

China hoped that Japan talked and acted cautiously and played a constructive role on the nuclear issue, he said.

Trump announced new U.S. sanctions on Thursday that he said allow targeting of companies and institutions that finance and facilitate trade with North Korea. Since Kim came to power after the death of his father Kim Jong Il in 2011, he has ramped up nuclear and missile weapon tests.

Trump derides North Korea's leader as 'Rocket Man'
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he was waiting for the North to express interest in "constructive, productive talks". Ambassador to the United States Nikki Haley discusses the North Korean issue with reporters at the White House on Friday .

But on the fringes of the United Nations meeting this week, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho upped the tensions further, telling reporters Pyongyang might now consider detonating a hydrogen bomb outside its territory.

Trump called Kim a "madman" on Friday, a day after Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

All North Korea's nuclear tests registered as earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 or above.

"Trump's rubbish is the open declaration of war against our supreme dignity, state, social system and people, and an unpardonable extra-large provocation", the report said, adding that "the U.S. warmongers will face unimaginable consequences". "Negotiation is the only way out and deserves every effort", Wang told the UN General Assembly.

The United States and South Korea are technically still at war with North Korea because the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce and not a peace treaty.

"He, who cried out the extermination of the Korean nation, is a blood-thirsty beast indulged in massacring", the Korean Central News Agency cited the statement as saying.

That resolution imposed a ban on condensates and natural gas liquids, a cap of 2 million barrels a year on refined petroleum products and a cap on crude oil exports to North Korea at current levels. The country also has tested more than a dozen missiles this year, some of which have flown over Japan - a strong US ally.
