Colts trade for Brissett as Luck is taken off PUP

Jacoby Brissett

Acquiring Brissett could be a sign Luck will miss more games than the Colts would like ... or perhaps they just got an interesting young quarterback for a receiver they didn't want anymore.

ESPN's Field Yates, citing a league source, Tweeted Saturday afternoon that Brissett is heading to the Colts in exchange for receiver Phillip Dorsett.

New England needed more depth at wide receiver after Julian Edelman suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Detroit Lions on August 25. The Colts wouldn't have played Tolzien in the fourth preseason game - which is often for players trying to make a last impression for a roster spot - if they believed he was completely ready for the regular season. Brissett also rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts during his rookie season in New England. He was 28-of-39 for 341 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, and ran for another touchdown.

Dorsett was a 2015 first-round draft choice of the Colts (29th overall). Dorsett never panned out the way the Colts had hoped, but the Colts coaching staff is not the Patriots coaching staff, by any stretch of the imagination.

The Patriots had needs at wide receiver and punt returner.

The best way to summarize the Brissett trade is to suggest the Patriots got a player who is likely to play for one who was not likely to play. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder has appeared in 26 games with seven starts and totaled 51 receptions for 753 yards and three touchdowns.

All along, Brissett seemed like a safe candidate to make the roster unless another team proposed a trade to the Patriots.

The trade comes the day after Brissett, a third-round pick out of NC State in 2016, put up an impressive performance in New England's final preseason game, a 40-38 loss to the Giants. They also are exceptionally deep at receiver, especially since undrafted rookie Austin Carr impressed in camp and the preseason. Third-year tight end James O'Shaughnessy, another product of a trade, was also released, and second year offensive lineman Ted Karras, who had showed versatility at guard and center, was also released but could return on the practice squad.
