Gauri Lankesh murder sparks outrage, Karna govt forms SIT

Woman journalist's killing shocks India

CPI-M procession: Meanwhile, the State Committee of the CPI-M will take out a procession tomorrow in protest against the killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru yesterday.

Bindu Bhaskar, a senior journalist and faculty of the Asian College of Journalism, recalled that Lankesh, her colleague at the Times Group in the 1980s, never wavered in her focus on social issues that impacted citizens despite death threats.

A silent march condemning her killing was organised by Press Club of Mumbai on Wednesday and supported by other organisations such as TV journalist Association, Mantralaya Journalist Association and Crime Journalist Association, among others.

Washington, Sep 6 A US-based media watchdog today urged the Karnataka Police to thoroughly investigate the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh who was shot dead at her residence in Bangalore.

The Congress said "muzzling the voice of ordinary citizens and silencing dissent" is the slogan of "New India" under the Modi government.

"Sometimes the prime minister speaks under pressure but the entire idea is to crush dissent and this is resulting in a very serious problem in India", he said in a series of tweet.

Refugee Quotas Are Legal, Brussels Tells Budapest and Bratislava
The European Court of Justice has rejected efforts by Hungary and Slovakia to stay out of an EU scheme meant to relocate refugees. Some 54,000 are now due to be taken from camps in Turkey, which lowers the total figure to be relocated from Greece and Italy.

In an audacious attack, unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants pumped bullets into 55-year-old Gauri, known for her left-leaning outlook and forthright views against Hindutva politics, as she left her vehicle after reaching her home.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar described Lankesh as the voice of liberal media and demanded that the culprits must be booked.

Press Club of Bengaluru president Sadashiva Shenoy, who was closely associated with Gauri, said, "divisive forces can not muzzle the liberal voices by resorting to killing". In Ahmedabad, 200 people, including journalists, gathered at Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati area in defence of freedom of expression, said Gujarat Media Club President Darshan Desai. A joint memorandum, submitted to the Karnataka Chief Minister, sought speedy investigation and noted that the murder had sent "shock waves across the journalist community for its brazenness".

The saffron party also asked the Karnataka government to arrest the murderers swiftly and wondered if the SIT constituted by it will meet the same fate as the one probing the August 2016 murder of rationalist MM Kalburgi, whose killers remain untraced. "The BJP, the central government or any organisation related to us has no relation with this incident", Union minister Nitin Gadkari said.

The senior BJP leader said that law and order is the responsibility of the Karnataka government.

"The Siddaramaiah government failed in expediting the investigation of previous sensitive criminal cases as well as reaching the conclusion during inquiry as expected".
