LSU defense smothers BYU in 27-0 win

LSU coach Ed Orgeron to keep suspensions, discipline in-house

The Tigers smothered BYU's offense and outgained the Cougars 479 to 97 in total yards.

BYU was never even able to cross into LSU territory, nor did the Cougars force any costly Tiger mistakes.

Freshman tight end Matt Bushman led BYU receivers with 43 yards on four receptions while sophomore wide receiver Micah Simon caught two passes for 28 yards.

On the next play from scrimmage, LSU cornerback Andraez Williams intercepted BYU's Tanner Mangum pass at the LSU 35-yard line. Troy Warner added nine tackles and four solo stops.

That was particularly the case on third down, where the Cougars were 2-of-10 - with one conversion was on the first drive of the game and the next coming with the game out of reach in the final period.

When Heisman hopeful was not in the game, senior running back Darrel Williams hammered away at the Cougar defense. LSU quarterback Danny Etling was almost flawless, as the senior completed 14-of-17 passes for 173 yards.

Guice had TD runs of 1 and 4 yards, both capping off long, time-consuming drives. BYU trailed 14-0 at the half after LSU missed a 34-yard field goal. The Tigers maintained their lead, 14-0, heading into the locker room. Two plays later, Williams scored from one yard out to make it 27-0.

The BYU defense held LSU on a critical fourth-and-goal on the three yardline seven minutes into the fourth quarter.
