North Korea Completed Its Most Powerful Nuclear Test Yet

A worker arranges South Korean newspapers reporting about North Korea’s hydrogen bomb test at a news paper distributing station in Seoul South Korea Sunday Sept. 3 2017. North Korea says it has detonated a thermonuclear weapon at an underground test

"This latest action by North Korea is reckless and poses an unacceptable further threat to the global community", May said in an emailed statement.

If carried out, that option could mean a halt to USA trade with China, which has supported economic sanctions on North Korea but remains the key economic partner for the rogue nation.

"I was eating brunch just over the border here in Yanji when we felt the whole building shake", Michael Spavor, director of the Paektu Cultural Exchange, which promotes business and cultural ties with North Korea.

Japan immediately raised the prospect of further sanctions against the isolated North, with Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga saying that curbs on its oil trade would be on the table.

"Their words and actions continue to be very hostile and unsafe to the United States", Trump said in the first of a series of tweets.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it recorded a 6.3 magnitude natural disaster in North Korea on Sunday.

"The United States has to play its own role and should not be blindly putting pressure on China to try and squeeze North Korea", said Ruan Zongze, a former Chinese diplomat now with the China Institute of International Studies, a think-tank affiliated with the Foreign Ministry. What he called South Korea's "talk of appeasement" would not work as "they (the North Koreans) only understand one thing!"

Impoverished North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Trump will meet with his national security team Sunday to discuss the situation, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sunday morning.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged the United Nations Security Council to react quickly and decisively. It has developed projectiles that it says could reach the USA mainland, and some experts agree that's likely true.

Maduro Invites All To World Solidarity Summit With Venezuela
That could choke off access to NY debt markets and substantially raise the likelihood of Venezuela being forced into default. National security advisor HR McMaster followed suit, saying " no military actions are anticipated in the near future ".

A spokesperson for Vice President Mike Pence said he would be in attendance.

Analysts are divided on whether Sunday's test could lead to more North Korean provocations, or become an opening for dialogue.

The nuclear test, which is North Korea's sixth, but the first since Mr Trump became president, will be seen as a provocation on nearly the same scale.

The Prime Minister lashed out at Kim Jong-un after the rogue state detonated its first ever hydrogen bomb - five times more than powerful than the weapon dropped on Hiroshima by the U.S. to end World War 2.

Pyongyang is also yet to prove that any warhead it places on a long range-missile can survive re-entry into the earth's atmosphere after an intercontinental flight. The defiant move by the reclusive nation is seen as a major step in its longstanding efforts to be able to hit the USA mainland with a nuclear attack.

Trump's cabinet has at times tried to show the president's tweets are not shifts in official US policy.

Nowadays her appearances are rare, but two months ago she announced the launch of its intercontinental ballistic missile, and she was back on Korean Central Television screens Sunday with its latest milestone.

Earlier, China urged North Korea to stop "wrong" actions and said it would fully enforce United Nations resolutions on the country. North Korea's fifth nuclear test, in 2016, was also conducted soon after the joint USA military drill that North Korea has strongly protested is a threat to its security.

China has lambasted the West and its allies over recent weeks for promoting the "China responsibility theory" for North Korea, and been upset by Seoul and Washington's own military drills that Beijing says have done nothing to cool tensions.
