Rohingya crisis: Suu Kyi blasts 'misinformation'

Rohingya refugees arrive at a makeshift new camp in Unchiprang in Bangladesh

Mr Modi, who held wide-ranging talks with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, asserted that it was important to maintain the security and stability of the land and maritime boundaries of the two countries.

They also called for setting up a special fund to help the Rohingya seeking refuge in Bangladesh, suspending diplomatic relations with Myanmar, boycotting Myanmarese goods, and to contact the OIC and the United Nations to find an immediate solution to the problem.

National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights Chairperson Babar Nawaz Khan told Express that meetings with diplomats were continuing regarding the Myanmar government's atrocities against its Muslims minority. Myanmar also vowed not to allow any insurgent group to utilise its soil to undertake hostile acts against India, the statement said.

Though both Suu Kyi and Htin Kyaw have visited India since their government came to power in Myanmar early a year ago, Modi - who has made India's neighbourhood his diplomatic priority - had till now only visited the country for a multilateral summit.

"Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose made the clarion call of "Give me blood and I will give you freedom" in Myanmar and thousands of men and women responded", Modi said while addressing the Indian diaspora here.

The Indian government is also concerned about Rohingya immigrants in the country, and has been considering to deport them. The Myanmar leader thanked Modi for his support against the "terror threat" her country faces.

The envoy added that the Prime Minister will also be visiting the Kali Temple, one of the oldest temples in Yangon, the mausoleum of the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and also pay his respects at the martyrs mausoleum in Myanmar which is a mark of respect to founding father of this country, General Aung San. During his 40-minute long speech, Modi said that "people to people ties are the strength of India-Myanmar relations".

In the statement, he said India shares Myanmar's concerns over "extremist violence" in the Rakhine state, especially the loss of innocent lives.

Suu Kyi was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for her work in bringing democracy to Myanmar, but some have called for her Prize to be taken back.
