Roku IPO Priced at $14, Values Firm at $1.3B

Reed Hastings

"We depend on a small number of content publishers for a majority of our streaming hours, and if we fail to monetize these relationships, directly or indirectly, our business could be harmed", the company said in the filing. Roku revenue comes from the sale of Roku TV streaming devices, from advertising and subscription revenue. However, rather than being anxious about only one big competitor, Roku will have to fend off others previously named such as Google, Apple and Amazon.

However, there are some pitfalls to be wary of: the online streaming industry has a few very big players involved and Roku might be considered a small boat on this very big ocean. High-profile companies like Snap Inc. and Blue Apron have struggled to meet lofty initial expectations from investors, though Spotify's long-rumored initial public offering, which has been tied to potentially late 2017 or early 2018, could be a positive move for the market.

Trump administration announces new travel restrictions
Officials said Venezuela was added to the list because its government won't say whether its citizens pose a public safety threat. For example, while Iran remains on the list of countries with travel restrictions, student and exchange visas are an exception.

Roku's revenue is growing fast as cord-cutters and other consumers snap up its devices, the cheapest model of which sells for $30. Not to mention, most TVs sold today feature functions to download streaming video apps. This compares to $320 million in revenue and $38 million in losses for 2015.

The stock, which trades under the ticker "ROKU", debuted on the Nasdaq, and soared as much as 30% above its IPO price initially. All told, Roku has raised $208 million in funding. The company lost $24.2 million in the first half of 2017. Users streamed more than 6.7 billion hours on the Roku platform in the six months ended in June 2017, 62% growth from the six months ended June 2016. Where Google, Amazon, and Apple are blocking rival services and products-Google recently pulled its YouTube video Service from Amazon's Echo Show device, and Netflix was not initially included in one of Apple's TV apps-Roku offers its users a wide range of streaming options.
