Ryanair pilots: No thanks to €12000 bonuses for working backlogged holiday days

Ryanair 20m euro compensation mess

The airline reportedly offered its existing pilots a tax-free bonus of £12,000 in exchange for agreeing to work extra days, in order to avoid having to cancel even more flights.

Pilots at London Stansted, Dublin, Frankfurt and Berlin were offered the pay rise year, with similar offers at other airports dependent on whether those bases have a surplus of pilots.

But one group, made up of employee councils from 14 Ryanair bases across Europe, have sent a letter to the firm refusing the offer.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary admitted mistakes to disgruntled shareholders Thursday as the airline struggles to overcome a scheduling crisis that is costing the company millions of euros.

He added the company does not need the agreement of pilots to take back a week of leave and added that if pilots "misbehave there will be no goodies".

RTÉ News has seen documents which raise the possibility of a work-to-rule by pilots, which would significantly worsen the current disruption to flights at the airline.

He dismissed talk of possible industrial action, including reported plans for a work-to-rule, saying: "There isn't a union".

Hurricane Jose twists in Atlantic
For the European weather model, a recurvature out to sea or a landfall in New England or Canada were the preferred solutions. It is expected to remain well to the east-northeast of the Bahamas through Wednesday, the hurricane center predicted.

O'Leary revealed that about 400,000 booked flights will be canceled.

"I would challenge any pilot to explain how this is a hard job or how it is they are overworked or how anybody who by law can't fly more than 18 hours a week could possibly be suffering from fatigue", he said at Ryanair's annual shareholder meeting on Thursday, according to The Guardian.

They seem to have found that voice.

In addition, more than a fifth of those affected - more than 63,000 - will be reimbursed the amounts paid by the end of the business day on Wednesday. With pilots rejecting the latest offer, there is a risk of more cancellations in the future.

Angry customers inundated Ryanair's Facebook page and many are also complaining their calls and messages through the airline's call centre and online "chat" service are going unanswered or being cut off.

New contracts, the letter said, should help stop the large number of colleagues who are leaving for "greener pastures".

The airline also said that 175,000 of the 315,000 passengers affected by the mass cancellations have been rebooked on alternative Ryanair flights.
