Terror attacks take 50 lives in Southern Iraq, many more wounded

At least 50 people have been killed in two attacks in southern Iraq.

Jassem al-Khalidi, a senior health official, told the TV channel that more than 87 people had sustained injuries in the attacks.

Shortly afterward, two suicide bombers, including one driving a auto rigged with explosives, blew themselves, Iraqi officials said.

Numerous wounded were in serious condition, he told AFP.

So-called Islamic State said it carried out the attacks.

In the second incident, attackers detonated a vehicle bomb at a nearby security checkpoint.

Gauri Lankesh murder sparks outrage, Karna govt forms SIT
Press Club of Bengaluru president Sadashiva Shenoy, who was closely associated with Gauri, said, "divisive forces can not muzzle the liberal voices by resorting to killing".

The area targeted is often used by Shia pilgrims and visitors from Iran on their way to the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala further north.

Police sources said some police officers had died in the checkpoint attack, but the toll from that incident remained unclear. With loss of its territories in Iraq, ARS should focus on those actions of guerrilla and multiply attacks against population and security forces.

The attack occurred as Iraqi forces battled to defeat Isis militants in areas under their control.

Acting at the request of Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi, the Iraqi parliament on Thursday sacked the governor of Kirkuk over his decision for the northern province to also take part in the Kurdish referendum.

The group's only other stronghold is Hawija, in Kirkuk province some 300 kilometres north of Baghdad.
