Trump unlikely to nominate Cohn as Fed chair

Gary Cohn U.S. President Donald Trump's top economic adviser steps from Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland U.S. August 30

Gary Cohn is unlikely to be chosen by President Trump to replace Janet Yellen as the next head of the Federal Reserve, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The report said that Cohn's chances dropped after he criticized the president's response to the Charlottesville alt-right protests, the report said, quoting people familiar with the president's thinking.

Mr Fischer, 73, a former economics professor and long-time central bank official, said he was resigning for personal reasons effective on or around Oct 13, eight months before his term expires.

Cohn remains "focused on his responsibilities ... including a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deliver meaningful tax reform that creates jobs and grows the economy, '"a White House spokesperson said". Another administration official stated Trump was "considering several candidates" for the Fed. In an August interview with the Financial Times, Cohn criticized Trump, saying the administration "can and must do better".

Odisha is among the states high on the priority list of party chief Amit Shah for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The JD (U) and the Shiv Sena skipped the swearing-in ceremony while Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK attended it.

After a neo-Nazi murdered counter-protestor Heather Hayer by plowing his vehicle into a crowd of people, Trump condemned violence "on many sides" and noted a few days later there were "very fine people on both sides". Trump was reportedly furious with Cohn's comments.

Mr Trump has said he would consider reappointing Ms Yellen, who was nominated to lead the Fed by former president Barack Obama.

An unnamed White House official told the Journal that Cohn might be able to patch up his relationship with Trump if he successfully shepherds an an overhaul of the federal tax code through Congress. Privately Cohn has told associates he was disgusted with the president's remarks.
