United Nations chief appeals to Myanmar govt to end violence against Rohingya Muslims

A Rohingya refugee boy walks in the water after crossing the Bangladesh Myanmar border in Teknaf

A trawler carrying Rohingya Muslims has capsized in the Bay of Bengal, and at least five people have drowned, police said Wednesday.

During the conversation, Erdogan condemned escalating human rights violations targeting the minority group and said that they "deeply concerned" the world, sources from his office said.

The government was working hard to ensure terrorism did not spread across Rakhine State, she added.

A failure by the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi to come to grips with economic inequality and provide adequate public services such as education, access to justice and disaster relief allows Ma Ba Tha to gain legitimacy, the report said. The photos on Mehmet Simsek's Twitter account had been taken down.

The latest violence was sparked when insurgent fighters of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked government troops on August 25.

The military has said almost 400 people, a lot of them insurgents, have died in clashes.

Guterres reiterated his condemnation of the recent attacks by the Rohingya insurgents. Myanmar soldiers retaliated with what they called "clearance operations" aimed at flushing insurgents out from Rohingya villages. Rohingya Muslims have long faced discrimination in the majority-Buddhist Southeast Asian country.

Mattis breaks with Trump on diplomacy with North Korea
Still, it's unclear whether the North will ever act on its threat to fire missiles at the "advanced base of invasion". This photo, taken on August 26, 2017, shows citizens watching North Korea's missile launch at Seoul Station in Seoul.

It was not immediately clear where the boat began its journey, or if the passengers had been among some 450 detained by Bangladeshi border guards and ordered Tuesday to return to Myanmar.

■ The prime minister's visit to Myanmar comes amid a spike in ethnic violence against Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state.

The UN children's agency UNICEF has said that 80 percent of Rohingya refugees are women and children and its workers are unable to reach twenty-eight thousand children in need of care.

India, which has absorbed many refugees, should not be told how to deal with refugees, he added. "Our clean water and sanitation work has been suspended, as have school repairs that were under way".

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi is coming under further pressure to halt violence against Rohingya Muslims that has sent almost 125,000 of them fleeing over the border to Bangladesh in just over 10 days.

He said the aid would be distributed by military helicopters along with the Rakhine state government as uncertainty and security concerns continue in the region.

Guterres cited the longstanding history of "discrimination, hopelessness and extreme poverty" against Rohingya and warned about possible ethnic cleansing.
