United Nations chief to open signing for 1st nuclear ban treaty

Nepal to sign Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

It was the first legally binding global agreement to comprehensively disallow nuclear weapons with the goal of leading towards their total elimination, but none of the 9 countries believed to have such weapons - United States, Russia, Britain, China, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel - took part.

The United States and the other nuclear-armed states urged other countries not to sign it. Nevertheless, the treaty will become effective 90 days after being ratified by at least 50 countries, and 42 have already signed the treaty during Wednesday's United Nations ceremony.

They would be barred from developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, otherwise acquiring, possessing or stockpiling nuclear weapons "under any circumstances". A shipload of nuclear fuel containing plutonium returned to Japan after reprocessing in France for use at the Takahama plant as the country tries to burn more plutonium amid worldwide concerns about its stockpile.

Most obviously, North Korea will still possess its 10 nuclear weapons and the ability to employ them against other nations.

The treaty, which prohibits a full range of nuclear weapon-related activities, was adopted in July and will open for signature this week at the UN.

Canada began down a better path to peace in 1984, and it is high time we moved forward and called for our allies to do likewise.

"We commit ourselves to continuing to work for a world free of the threat of nuclear weapons". Japan, despite Hiroshima and Nagasaki and it's "never again" to use of nuclear weapons, joined the nuclear powers and NATO in not signing this treaty.

Spain went up by 17 points, 45-28, after the first half, which proved to be an insurmountable lead over Russians. Point Guard Sergio Rodriguez was also influential for his team; he scored 16 points and dished out 9 assists.

Many world leaders have dedicated a portion of their speeches to the General Assembly this week to addressing the North Korean nuclear threat.

He cited as an example "the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which in 1968 declared Latin America an area free of nuclear weapons". The bombings of Hiroshima on August 6 of that year and Nagasaki three days later ushered in the nuclear era.

While the treaty itself will not immediately eliminate any nuclear weapons, the treaty can, over time, further delegitimize nuclear weapons and strengthen the legal and political norm against their use.

Peter Maurer, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, also participated in the ceremony.

But Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, said countries signing the treaty will be taking a stand against nuclear weapons, "the only weapons of mass destruction not yet prohibited despite their huge destructive power and threat to humanity". "Humanity simply can not live under the dark shadow of nuclear warfare, and the vast suffering which we all know would result".

Of the 44 States, China, Iran, United States, Egypt and Israel have signed the treaty but not yet ratified it. DPRK, India and Pakistan have not signed it.
