White House Could Move to Withdraw From South Korea Trade Agreement Soon

A man walks past a street monitor showing North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un in a news report about North Korea's nuclear test in Tokyo Japan

"President Moon and President Trump reaffirmed their view that it was important to have North Korea come out to the dialogue table to peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue by applying maximum sanctions and pressure on the North".

Pyongyang says it will not give up on its nuclear deterrence unless Washington ends its hostile policy toward the country and dissolves the US-led United Nations command in South Korea.

US President Donald Trump and South Korea's Moon Jae-in agreed Friday to revise a bilateral treaty that limits Seoul's ballistic missile capabilities after the North's recent launch.

The top security adviser did not elaborate, but the move comes amid a growing call here for nuclear rearmament. Pacific Command and South Korea's defense minister, a Pacom spokeswoman said. President Moon has so far displayed commitment to upholding the principle of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula. The US, Chinese and Russian authorities put the seismic activity at a magnitude of 6.3.

Trump - who has warned that the United States military is "locked and loaded" in the event of further North Korean provocation - reacted angrily to the latest missile test.

Majority in poll: Trump rhetoric could 'accidentally' involve U.S. in worldwide conflict
For some comparison, in the same survey, 5% of voters said prejudice against minority groups was "not a problem at all" in the US. Ten percent of survey respondents said they did not know whether to trust Trump or the news media.

But it remains unclear whether the administration would actually withdraw from the deal, and industry representatives who have lobbied the White House say the president's team has done little of the work - like a wide consultation with affected industries - needed before taking such a step.

The admiral commended the professionalism of South Korean air force personnel involved in an August 30 training mission that included live-fire weapons drops on the Pilsung Range by South Korean F-15K's, U.S. Air Force B-1B strategic bombers, and U.S. Marine Corps F-35B fifth-generation fighters, Gesecki said.

US, Japanese and South Korean warplanes carried out a show of force against North Korea on Wednesday.

"It is believed that the USA is positive toward rotational deployment of F-22 and F-35B jets over Korea as it remains firm in countering North Korea's provocations", a government source said.

The reclusive state fired an intermediate-range Hwasong-12 over Japan early on Tuesday, which it said was a mere "curtain-raiser" for the North's "resolute countermeasures" against ongoing US-South Korean military drills.

The White House, however, made no mention of this part of the conversation.
