Charges against suspect in Edmonton attack Saturday include attempted murder

Police searching for suspect after officer injured in altercation near Eskimos gameMore

An attack on a police officer outside a football game and a high-speed chase that injured four people in the western city of Edmonton are being investigated as acts of terrorism, Canadian police said on Sunday.

Sharif is charged with five counts of attempted murder and four counts of unsafe operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

Edmonton police Sgt. Michael Elliott, speaking on behalf of the Alberta Federation of Police Associations, said the public reaction to the attack will be critical.

"The Edmonton police has arrested and placed in custody a man whom we believe to be responsible for these acts of violence", said Rod Knecht, chief, Edmonton police.

Police arrested a 30-year-old Abdulahi Hasan Sharif after an officer was hit by a vehicle and repeatedly stabbed while he was working traffic control outside a CFL football game between the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers Saturday evening.

Thirty-year-old Abdulahi Sharif has been charged after a police officer was stabbed and four pedestrians were struck down by a fleeing U-Haul truck on Saturday night.

A policeman in Canada's Edmonton city was rammed by a motorist who then attacked him with a knife on Saturday night while four pedestrians were hit by a van later in a pair of suspected terror attacks, reports said.

The officer, who suffered serious stabbing wounds to his head, face, and arm, is expected to make a full recovery.

Louis Weather Conditions and Forecast, October 3 am
Thursday , there is a 70 percent chance of storms before 1 p.m., with more rain and storms after 1 p.m., the weather service said. Highs are still expected to make it to the low/ mid-80 with winds from the south/ southeast at 10-15 miles per hour .

Knecht said the suspect nearly T-boned a vehicle and purposely drove into pedestrians, injuring four of them.

Later that evening, police at a checkpoint identified a man driving a U-Haul vehicle as the owner of the Malibu.

Becoming suspicious when police held him up, the driver sped off toward Jasper Avenue, downtown Edmonton's main east-west thoroughfare, with multiple police cars in pursuit.

"It is believed at this time that these two incidents are related, " Knecht said. "Further, the suspect was not deemed, at that time, to pose a threat to the security of Canada based on the information that was available to investigators". This raised doubts in the mind of the police and the driver sensed trouble. Two more remain in hospital as of Sunday.

"The constable is doing surprisingly well and is receiving support from the Edmonton Police Service and his family", he said.

When Abdulahi Hasan Sharif was flagged as a potential terrorist threat two years ago, police in Alberta complained they were overwhelmed with Islamic State-inspired suspects.

"No shots were fired".
