Voters have threatened to quit the party over Waters' extreme anti-Islam rhetoric.

Bolton, an infantry officer who also served in the police, was elected the UK Independence Party's fourth leader in a year with 3874 votes, 30 per cent of the total.

"The other thing is, I do not believe for a moment that we should be pushing this out and allowing the negotiations to be endless before we leave".

Asked at a press conference after the result was announced whether this made him an "establishment mole", Bolton said his background made him ready for the job.

"Without being united, we can not lead", Bolton said. Instead he suffered a hefty defeat in February's Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election and later resigned after leading the party to a disastrous result in the snap general election.
