Senate Intelligence Committee Interim Report: Russians Interfered in 2016 Elections

Damn Russians And Their Facebook Ads

The disclosure has added fuel to the findings of United States intelligence officials that Russian Federation was involved in influencing Trump's race against Hillary Clinton.

The same day it gave to the Senate Intelligence Committee more than 3,000 ads that it said likely operated out of Russian Federation and pushed divisive issues during the campaign.

"The committee continues to look into all evidence to see if there was any hint of collusion", Burr told reporters during a press conference regarding the status of the Russian Federation investigation Wednesday afternoon. "And we're not in a position to come to any type of finding".

That report said Russian Federation waged a cyber and disinformation campaign to discredit Hillary Clinton, help Donald Trump's campaign, and undermine faith in the democratic process.

But Warner painted a picture of widespread Kremlin-driven activity.

Sen. Warner expressed disappointment that it took the Department of Homeland Security 11 months to release the names of the 21 states targeted by Russian Federation during the election, stressing that "we can do better than that".

"I fear if you add up all those things it was a decent rate of return", Warner said. He warned that the media has only gotten "glimpses" into their investigation.

Reports continue to emerge detailing the scope of Russia's plan to sow chaos during the 2016 election.

"The Senate Intelligence Committee does not release documents provided by witnesses, companies - whoever, whatever the classification, it's not a practice that we're going to get into", Burr said, echoing similar comments he had made previously. Burr said the committee "cannot decide the credibility" of the dossier without understanding who paid for it and its sources. "We believe that the american people deserve to know firsthand".

It is unclear whether Steele is cooperating with Robert Mueller, the FBI's special counsel who is conducting a parallel investigation into Russia's election interference. They've also interviewed Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and confidant. Burr and Warner are keeping their committee clear of that question, and another panel, the Judiciary Committee, has locked horns with the Justice Department about getting witnesses for its own inquiry.

Alongside several other congressional committees, it is also looking into any connections between Russian meddling and Mr Trump's campaign.

Even more than that, the senators said the Russian meddling did not end after the 2016 elections and will likely continue into the 2018 midterm and 2020 presidential elections. CNN has confirmed that states targeted included Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.

Burr and Warner said they have largely confirmed the conclusions the intelligence community reached under the Obama administration that the Russian government meddled in the 2016 USA election.

"We still believe there needs to be a more aggressive, whole of government approach", Warner said. "Their response was frankly inadequate on every level". Facebook said Wednesday that it had accepted invitations from both committees.
